Preferred backup method for VM's running SQL databases

Windows 2008r2 standard Master and Media servers running NBU 7.6.0.4

I'm trying to reclaim some disk space on our backup targets, and one area I see potentially significant savings may me in the backup of several VM's we have that run SQL databases. There are approximately 60 such servers in our environment.

So, what is happening is that the VM policies are backing up the VMDK file (VMware policy type), which is also capturing the volumes which contain the sql databases. But, we are also running daily MS-SQL-Server policies for each of the sql databases that reside on these servers, so we are capturing this data twice.

Since we have quite a few of these, and they are VM's, I'd like to exclude the database volumes from getting captured in the VMDK backup, in the policy. But, since these VM's are SQL servers, they do require the NBU agent to be installed, which means I could also use the standard exclusion lists in the client properties to do this as well (much more time and work).

Choice 1). Use the "exclude data disks" option and continue to back these sql servers up using a VMware policy

Choice 2). Move these SQL vm's into an MS-Windows policy type, and use the client's exclusion list to omit backup of  *.ldf,  *.ndf, *.mdf files.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks all!

Todd

bpduplicate not creating new primary copy

hi,

I have a media failing and want to dup its contents to a new tape in the same pool. I cannot seem to trick it into doing this, have tried increasing the max number of copies to 4, have tried specifying a different destination pool, have tried specifiying the copy number, etc., and have ran out of ideas. Haven't seen another post which captures this exactly. All images on the tape are copy #2. The master was set to only allow 3 copies which is usually plenty (generally one for the DSU copy, one for primary tape, and one for the vaulted copy) but even increasing that limit made no diff. The pool the source currently resides in is called Primary and suspect this is maybe confusing the command but maybe not. None of these seem to work:

bpduplicate -id 056754 -dstunit T120_LTO5 -dp Primary -s 01/01/15 -e 03/25/15 -cn 2 -set_primary 1

bpduplicate -id 056754 -dstunit T120_LTO5 -dp Test -s 01/01/15 -e 03/25/15 -cn 2 -set_primary 1

bpduplicate -id 056754 -dstunit T120_LTO5 -dp Test -s 01/01/15 -e 03/25/15 -primary -set_primary 1

They all fail the same way basically:

Backupid image101_1425548649 copy 1 already exists
Duplicate of backupid image101_1425548649 failed, the entity already exists (226).

What does it take to make a new primary copy so I can destroy the old media? All images on the vaulted media are copy 1. There is no copy 3 that I can see, but will not let me create another copy.

thanks!

Netbackup not starting on a Solaris 10 media master

Using Netbackup v7.0.1 on SPARC Solaris 10 on a media server connected to a SAN.  Server has been working with this Netbackup configuration since 2011  -- other than the OS being patched.  No changes have been implemented recently to coincide with the issue.

Netbackup tends to cause some servers to hang at boot at times.  The solution is to remove the start script from the run levels and start NB manually once the server is up.  However, that workaround is not working for one of the servers.  In looking online, others have issues, but I can't find any suggestions that are helping.

The following is hanging:

     /etc/init.d/netbackup start
     (hangs)

It also hangs if trying to bounce by issuing a stop while the start is hanging.

     /etc/init.d/netbackup stop
     (hangs)
     /etc/init.d/netbackup start

A scrub on the ZFS filesystem shows no corruption.

In troubleshooting the start scripts, there doesn't appear to be one NB command being run that is causing the hang.  It seems to vary.  But currently, when the start scrips calls `nbemm` seems to be the primary culprit.

Running bpps -x  shows that none of the MM processes are running.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Sharepoint 2013 GRT Backups

We are attempting to set up Sharepoint GRT 2013 backups.  Master is aix 7.1 Netbackup 7.6.0.3  Media Server is Netbackup Appliance 5230 2.6.0.3 Client is Windows 2008 R2 Netbackup Version 7.6.0.3.  Sharepoint Version is 2013.

We are able to backup up Sharepoint without using GRT(using Sharepoint agent) but when we tried GRT the job starts, starts the snapshot and sits there for anywhere from 24-96 hours and errors with a status 130.  It never makes it to actually backing up any data.  There is no firewall involved here and name resolution other checks etc are ok.  In the bpfis log we see the dbs on the backend sql server getting frozen and snapped but we backup never starts.

One odd thing we are seeing in the bpfis log is this-status: FAILED, (9) READ_FAILED; system: (10036) A blocking operation is currently executing. ; FROM 0.0.0.0 TO client name client ip(it has actual web server name and ip) bpspsserver VIA pbx

We are not sure if this is related but can't figure out why this message is showing.  We were able to telnet between the clients and master/media ports 111 7394 ,13724 1556, 135,139,445.

We also tested nfs connections between media and client and that worked.  We have had a case opened with Symantec for about two months and it has gone to backline and we're all stumped. Anyone seen this or have any ideas?  Thanks.

bprestore doesn't rename restored file

Hello

I've been banging my head on this one yesterday. Im on W2K8R2 using NBU 7.5.06, im restoring files that were renamed/changed paths to their new paths. I have hundreds of these, hence the need to script this.

Im restoring UNC paths from the media server. Restoring any file over an old file without path change works no problem. When using the rename file, the restore works well but the rename file process just will not work. When using the rename file, i see the old path file restored but the new path retains the old file. I've tried deleting the new path file before the restore but doesn't change a thing - the file is still restored to the old path.

Im sure i have a CR after each line for both -f file and -R file, the proper case for each character is respected (otherwise it wont restore but i can restore a file, just not rename it). I see in the log that the file is restored but no error concerning why the file is not renamed/changed (and i have the proper rights on the files).

My command line is

bprestore -C <mediaserver> -L e:\restorelog.txt -en -R e:\restoreTolist.txt -f e:\restore_list.txt

I tried both methods for the rename file using

change /\\UNCfilepath to /\\UNCnewfilepath<CR>

or

rename <size> UNColdpath <size> UNCnewpath<CR>

Can anyone help? I read ALL the articled concerning this, the manual 5 times, tried everything and cannot figure it out.

I edited the server names, ip, and file path with <UPCASEString>

Hi,

I am new to Netbackup and trying to learn and understand it, so i would really appreciate if you can help me with some questions on below mentioned vmoprcmd output.

Q1. Under Host Name we see "hamex", may i know hamex is the media server or master server . So what does basically host name denote here?

Q2. Can you please explain Drive Name, what does all parts of "IBM.ULTRIUM-TD2.005" denotes here.

Q3. What is the drive index and where can i find it in this command output?

I would really appreciate if you could help me with these questions.

Thanks

Unload delayed tapes for rotation?

Thanks for any ideas you may have...

Using Netbackup 7.6 with a single library (2 drives).

Recently decided to increase the tape unload delay to 30 minutes to eliminate load/unload inbetween our SQL transaction log backups which are at 30 minute intervals.  Works perfect, except when it comes time to remove tapes from the library for off-site storage.

Between jobs, I'd like to be able to send a command to the library to unload the drives and return the tapes to their slots. After that I would be able to eject and import.  The nxt time the SQL policy job starts, it would load the new tapes.

I saw a post from Marianne that indicated you could use 'Reset', but that comes back with 'Drive is assigned'.
Short of shutting down BP services, is there any way to command and unload?

Thanks,
Kirk

Hello Experts,

We have a Policy aaa. Below is the schedule.

1:-Incremental:- Backup window 9 am to 6 pm - sunday to friday- Calender Based and (excluded saturday)

2:-FULL Full :- Bakcup window 9 pm to 9 am - saturday only - Frequncy based with (once in a week)

Problem Description:- Incremental Backup started on 9 am schedule on friday got completed in 3: 35 pm interestingly as soon as incremental
got completed at 3:35 pm on friday it got kicked off again.

What i concluded is as backup windows was from 9 am till 6 pm backup got completed at 3:35 pm however, backup windows
is still open and calender could not see any incremental backup on saturday as on saturday full backup was there it fot kicked if off again.
But the quetion is we have only 6 schedules on calender it should not run again. It did its part on friday.

Its my understanding.

Attached are the full and incremental exclude options.

Pls help me to understand what exactly had happened?

Hi

In my environment, Vault profiles are configured for Duplicating the backup images from my disk to tape.,

Everyday VAULT profile is configured to run using the respective Vault Type Backup policy.,

Everyday my vault job is getting failed with "306" error code and the respective Duplication jobs are getting partially successful with the below output.,

03/24/2015 22:59:03 - Error bpduplicate (pid=25238) Status = successfully duplicated 323 of 348 images.
03/24/2015 22:59:03 - Error bpduplicate (pid=25238) Status = the requested operation was partially successful.
03/24/2015 22:59:03 - end Duplicate; elapsed time 2:52:16
the requested operation was partially successful  (1)

When i search in the vault session logs., i can see the file named as "failed.images" file.,

16:00:18 INF - Duplicating policy xxxxxxxxxxxxxx schedule Full backup id xxxxxxxx copy 1 created on 03/13/2015 21:00:06 on source
 path @aaaac
16:00:19 INF - Waiting for mount of media id DR0113 on server xxxxxxxxxxx for writing.
16:00:22 INF - Beginning duplicate on server xxxxxxxxxxx of client xxxxxxxxxxx, reading file @aaaac.
16:01:05 INF - Beginning duplication on server xxxxxxxxxxxxx of client xxxxxxxxxxx, creating copy 2 on destination media id DR0113

16:01:24 INF - Duplicate of backupid xxxxxxxxxx failed, media manager killed by signal (82).

Am getting the above error in the vault session logs output., But when i manually duplicate the image its getting successful.,

Can you please advise us on why some of the backup images are getting skipped on day to day basis.,??Also we are different backup images skipping on day to day basis.,

NBU master server version is 7.5.0.6

Running in LINUX platform "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.6 (Santiago)"

I know I posted this already in response to another post...

...but I've just looked through this doc again in more detail, and it really does deserve to be posted on it's own, it really is rather good.

It appears to be an official Symantec document, but who knows how long it will be available on this 'other' site...

...so, get it while you can:
