Request to verify this configuration (VMware Exchange 2010 GRT)

Hi,

I wonder if somebody might be able to validate our configuration before we start using NBU 7.6.1 for Exchange 2010 backups / restores.  We are using a minimal account rather than full Exhange / Domain admin account.  We will be using a vmware policy with the Exchange Recovery & Logs options selected.  All servers are virtual.

Environment consists of the following:

Exchange

  • Two node DAG cluster (MBX-1 & MBX-2). Each contain active & passive DB's.
  • Three Client Access Servers (CAS-1, CAS-2 & CAS-3).
  • Hardware Load Balancer sat in front of above CAS servers (CAS Array: outlook.domain.co.uk).
  • Two HUB Transport Servers (HUB-1 & HUB-2)

NetBackup

  • 1 x Master Server (NBU-MASTER)
  • 2 x Media Server (NBU-MASTER & NBU-MEDIA)

Configuration:

  • Created Active Directory user called 'NBU-MBX'
  • Member of: 'Domain Users', 'NetBackup Roles'
  • Created mailbox for above account

Scripts:

Ran the following scripts within MBX-1 EMS:

  • New-RoleGroup -Name NetBackupRoles -Roles @("Database Copies", "Databases", "Exchange Servers", "Monitoring", "Mail Recipient Creation", "Mail Recipients", "Recipient Policies")
  • Add-RoleGroupMember -Identity NetBackupRoles -Member NBU-MBX
  • New-ManagementRole -Name SymantecEWSImpersonationRole -Parent ApplicationImpersonation
  • New-ManagementRoleAssignment -Role SymantecEWSImpersonationRole -User NetBackupUser -Name "NBU-MBX-EWSImpersonation"
  • New-ThrottlingPolicy -Name "SymantecEWSRestoreThrottlingPolicy" -EWSPercentTimeInCAS $null -EWSPercentTimeInAD $null -EWSMaxConcurrency $null -EWSPercentTimeInMailboxRPC $null -PowerShellMaxConcurrency $null
  • Set-Mailbox -Identity NBU-MBX -ThrottlingPolicy "SymantecEWSRestoreThrottlingPolicy"

NBU-MASTER

  • Server for NFS Role Installed
  • Server for NFS service stopped & disabled
  • Ran "sc config portmap start=auto" command

NBU-MEDIA

  • Server for NFS Role Installed
  • Server for NFS service stopped & disabled
  • Ran "sc config portmap start=auto" command

Within NBU Console

  • Client Properties of MBX-1 -> Windows Client -> Exchange -> Entered credentials of NBU-MBX account.
  • Client Properties of MBX-2 -> Windows Client -> Exchange -> Entered credentials of NBU-MBX account.
  • Host Properties -> Master servers -> NBU-MASTER -> Distributed Application Restore Map -> added the following:

Application Host    Component Host

MBX-1

  • Added NBU-MBX account to local Administrators group.
  • Installed NBU Client.
  • Configured all NBU Client services to logon using NBU-MBX account.
  • Installed Symantec VSS.
  • Added NBU-MBX account to "Replace a process level token" group.
  • Installed 'Server for NFS' Role.
  • 'Server for NFS' Service set to Disabled.
  • Installed 'Client for NFS'.
  • 'Client for NFS' service set to Automatic Startup however when click start it stops immediately.  Normal?

MBX-2

  • Added NBU-MBX account to local Administrators group
  • Installed NBU Client
  • Configured all NBU Client services to logon using NBU-MBX account
  • Installed Symantec VSS
  • Added NBU-MBX account to "Replace a process level token" group
  • Installed 'Server for NFS' Role
  • 'Server for NFS' Service set to Disabled
  • Installed 'Client for NFS'
  • 'Client for NFS' service set to Automatic Startup however when click start it stops immediately.  Normal?

Questions I have are:

  • Do we not need to specify the CAS Array somewhere?
  • Is it best practice to add entry within hosts file on Media Server for single CAS server rather than VIP of Hardware Load Balancer?
  • Only the NFS Client is required on MBX & CAS servers?

How can I restore from copied NDMP-tapes ?

Dear all,

some time ago I was requested to make inbetween backups of some filesystems (on our NAS over NDMP) .
This differed slightly from the way we normally make our NAS-backups in terms of retention and (smaller) size of the backup itself, so it caused no problems.

After having made the first backup, I created a safetycopy and had a look to see if this could be done automatically.
I found out that, contrary to making  Windows-based backups from a SAN, it is not possible to have copies being made parallel to the primary backup as part of the policy. Since it only concerned 3 backups, it is not that much of a problem, so I continued copying manually.

If I now have a look at the BAR-interface (Preview required media ) for restoring one of these backups,
I only see the primary media listed on which the backup was initially made, not the copy.
How can I make sure that, when necessary, I can also restore from the copy-tape(s) ?

Continuing, I also want to make copies of old SAN-backups (MS-Windows based), that are currently on LTO-2 tapes before our environment (NAS+Library with drives) will be upgraded and the drives in the new library are too new/modern to read the LTO-2 tapes.
In fact the same question to end with:
How can I make sure that, when necessary, I can also restore from the copy-tape(s) ?

VM Conversion Server 2003 failing with Status 7

the conversion of Windows Server 2003 32 Bit Machines seems to be a known issue.

I've got the same issue - the conversion is failing with status 7.

Do you know whether there's a fix for this now? Or should I open a case?

MSDP, two retention models, which would consume more space, and why?

Env: NetBackup v7.6.1.1, MSDP, single master/media.

If I have the choice/option of either retention models of:

a) 2/8/0 - keep daily diff for 2 weeks, keep weekly full for 8 weeks, keep no monthly full.

...or:

b) 2/4/3 - keep daily diff for 2 weeks, keep weekly full for 4 weeks, keep monthly full for 3 months.

...thus...

...model a) oldest backup is two months old - and holds 8 daily diffs, and 8 fulls.

...model b) oldest backup is three months old - and holds 8 daily diffs, and 7 fulls.

...then which model would consume more back-end post-de-dupe space, and why?

My thinking is that de-dupe is essentially the difference between the oldest and the newest backups, i.e. all changes in between the two date ranges, and so model b) would have the greatest divergence, i.e. as backup ages it essentially appears to MSDP to become more and more unique, because over a longer period of time the most recent full will appear to be more different, because more writes/changes/updates will have occurred on the backup clients.

Hmm.

Thoughts, suggestions, advice, experience?

maximum files list of bparchive -f file.

hi all:
I have a file with the filepath of over 4millions files. When I issue bparchive -p "policy name" -s "schedule name" -k "string to facilitate searching/id the bkp" -L logilepath -f filename on my solaris 10 box. the bparchive takes its time to return the prompt; but there is nothing on the activity monitor nor the logfile, there is not error messages either.

I'm using NBU 6.0 MP7 (yes that old version) but I wonder what is the maximum for the list file (the file with the filepaths). 100K lines, 1 M lines???

NetBackup Plugin virtual machine

So I have inherited an environment where some things were partially setup and nobody knows where things were left off. I am trying to walk through the Symantec vCenter plugin setup to see why the error below is happening...

I am starting here and my question is how can I check to see what server was setup as the NB Plugin VM or if that is possible to figure out at all?

Also I am reading through this one...

On this piece how can I check to see if the nbwebgrp and nbwebsvc user has already been created?

I have done the port status command and verified that ports are indeed open, but the URL doesn't work. I am assuming that is probably because this Daemon isnt running?

Also I did notice the version of the plugin is 7.6.0.1 while my environment is 7.6.0.2. What is the latest version of the plugin and should they match?

Does NetBackup Master and Media Server Running on Solaris can be used to backup VMware Virtual Environments?

Hi all,

We have an existing Symantec Netbackup Master and Media server running on Sun Solaris environment.  Can it be used to backup our windows environments and especially VMware virtual server environments and their applications like AD, MS Exchange etc via Symantec agents??

We have Symantec Netbackup 7.1 with capacity based licenses and the current media (and master) server is attached to a tape library via FC. 

If this cannot be done then, do we need a separate media server running in windows environment with a tape library attached to the new media server?

Please clarify the things.

Media Retention

Hi Experts,

I have to increase retention of the images from 1 month to 1 year.

Found we have 4 tapes that have all the required images and 18 images on these 4 tapes.

we dont have mutiple retention on tape

Got confusion. I believe i have 2 options

1:- Extend the required images on tape one by one. That means i am extending tapes retention.

or 

2:- Extend the tape rention to one year. No need to change all images one by one. 

Pls correct me if i am wrong on any part here.

Now 

When we select any media from volume pool it says on the properties as per attachment. 

Expiration date
Never
Date

Does it referring to point 2 ? which i mentioned above. In short by extending media retention to one more year  am i setting the tape expiry to next year? that would mean netbackup wont write anything on this tape after it expires next year.

Pls help?

Hi All,

I am trying to install netbackup client on one of my solaris client. It failed showing below error:

Software installation on bmcbest1v-nb failed.
Software installation messages:
       bmcbest1v-nb ...
Client bmcbest1v-nb -- Solaris hardware running Solaris10
Installing NetBackup software on bmcbest1v-nb
bmcbest1v-nb: Connection timed out
Client bmcbest1v-nb is not responding.
       bmcbest1v-nb install failed

I am new on Netbackup. please suggest what i need to do.

Duplicate data on Virtual tape to Physical tape

Gurus,

 I am using NDMP accelerator to backup data on Isilon ( NAS) to DataDomain VTL, then need to  duplicate the data from VTLto physical library. The Isilon is connected to the physical tape drives. Can I configure the physical storage unit on the Isilon/NDMP host? Or do I need to find another Media server to configure the physical storage unit on that Media server? I would like to use the NDMP direct copy feature. VTL tape is LTO 4, Physical tape is LTO 6. Will it have any problem if they are different? Please let me know how to make it work.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 Backup Issue

Hi.. 

I have few Virtual Machines, recently we have migrated the Hyper-v From 2008 R2 to 2012 R2.

Post Migration few of my windows 2003 Sp2 Virtual Machines Backups are getting failed.

From Windows Logs I found below error messages. Any suggestion on this.

Could not create backup checkpoint for virtual machine '': Element not found. (0x80070490). 
(Virtual machine ID 15CD4588-4910-4B4C-B9DB-C2BDD3B13E34)

Off-host and Snapshot solution suggesiton

I am in a stage of designing a solution for customer who is already having NB5230 appliance and Netbackup master server windows 2012 R2.

custemer wants to backup vmware clients as below.

snapshot will be taken at client side and copied to MEDIASERVER or any other server.and then release client resources. 

netbackup will backup snapshot from offhost server and source client will be released.

Is there any hardware based snapshot server available?

I am experiencing a similar issue as this post:

I have a policy that backs up 4 clients at 4 different locations.  It's backing up the same path for each site.  Two of the four backups are working properly, the other two are backing up the folder I am specifying, but nothing below it.  We've spent hours checking the policy, client configs, and even the accounts the NBU services are using on the clients, but haven't come up with anything.  I was going to open a support ticket on Monday, but if anyone has a suggestion of something I can try now, I'm all ears.  I've attached the most recent bpbkar from one of the clients that is not backing up as expected.
