Hello,

I have been getting errors as follows randomly for both standard and oracle (RMAN) backups on my netbackup master server.

The version of the server is  7.5.0.7 running on RHEL 5.11

The version of the clients are 7.5.0.4  (SAN Clients)

Ther version of the Media servers are 7.5.0.4 (SAN Media).

The logs shows the following, I would like to know if there is any way to start digging for the cause of this issue:

Searches in Netbackup

I was familar with NBU version 7.5 and performed searches via command line as follows - this worked perfectly every time.

E:\program files\veritas\netbackup\bin\admincmd>bpflist –client orlhm-drfiler-a –d 04/01/14 –e 07/07/14 –rl 999

–policy orlhm_drfiler_a_mirror_enrollment_documents –pt NDMP | find “0003713971” > c:\student.txt

Now a new job with NBU 7.6.0.4.  Converted the search to the correct information at the new job and it would fail.  Finally got this command to work:

E:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin>bpflist -client oocsvondmp -d 04/01/2015
-e 06/28/2015 -pt NDMP -rl 999 -option GET_ALL_FILES | find "Personal.pst"> c:\
output5.txt

I have a few questions:

First regarding command line searches.  If I add the switch -policy and then the policy name, I get an error 'No entity was found'.  I really need to search by policy as searching by our Filer itself simply has way too much to search thru!

Second, is there anyway to use a wildcard in searches?  I have tried to use "*.pst" and then ".\.pst" and both of them resulted in no entity was found.

Lastly, we do have ops center analytics and I would like to try to use it for searches.  I think I have to setup an index server but have not been able to find documentation as to what is needed or how to go about this.

I've had a case open with Symantec for 2 weeks, on 3rd engineer.  And so far all suggestions have not worked.

Could really use someone with experience in searches to provide some insight!

Thanks in advance to all my NBU buddies!

NetBackup Java-console acting weird. Only BAR panel

Hello Experts,

It's a weird situation today as I see that my NBU Java console is coming up with BAR panel only.

It has all been working fine up until yesterday with full access and when I try to login this morning, its coming up with BAR panel only.

I have checked the auth.conf file under ...\Program Files\Veritas\java and permissions are still intact.

Not sure what went wrong. And I do "run as admin" always.

I tried to access JavaGUI both, on my laptop as well as on master server directly. But the issue remains the same.

As of now, I am making use of NetBackup Admin console, but I prefer to use Java Console always.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Backing up KMS database

We have tape encryption setup using KMS on Netbackup 7.5.0.6, The master server is Win2008 R2. I'm looking at the best way to backup KMS.

We plan to keep a paper copy of passphrases and key tag IDs so we can recreate the database entirely from scratch in a DR scenario. But we also want to perform regular backups of the database and host and key protection key files.

We can't backup the database to encrypted tape, because we'd need the keys to decrypt them. However if we back them up to tape using a dedicated media pool without encryption then we might as well not bother with the encryption because the keys would be available if the tapes fell into the wrong hands. Therefore backing them up to tape seems pointless. We first stage our backups to Data Domain, one local and one on a remote site replicating to each other. So regular backups to Data Domain seems the best approach.

Does that seem sensible?

A question about the "nbkmsutil -quiescedb" command. It sets the key database into a read-only state, does that mean that the only actions you can't perform are create or modify keys, key groups etc? I can setup a series of events using our scheduling tool to do the following:

1) run "nbkmsutil -quiescedb"

2) start a backup of the three KMS files to Data Domain

3) When backup completes run "nbkmsutil -noquiescedb"

I'm concerned that the backup may take some time to complete because we often have many backups queued up overnight. But as I understand it the quiescedb command won't affect normal tape writes and reads - it only prevents actual config changes to the keys such as create or modify. So it wouldn't matter if the keys were quiesced for several hours. Am I right?

Thanks

KMS Supported Tape Drives with Netbackup

Hi,

We are planning to implement KMS on Netbackup 7.6.1.1, As per Encryption and Security guide.

The KMS manages symmetric cryptography keys for the tape drives that conform to the T10 standard (LTO4).KMS is used with the tape hardware that has a built-in hardware encryption capability. An example of a tape drive that has built-in encryption is the IBM ULTRIUM TD4 cartridge drive.

KMS is also used with disk volumes associated with NetBackup AdvancedDisk storage solutions. KMS runs with Cloud storage providers.

Can we used LTO 5 and LTO 6 drives for KMS ?

How we can configure KMS for AdvanceDisk storage ?

Using 7.6.1 with vmware policy to MSDP

We have a policy that targets a vSphere VM folder holding several VM's. We do weekly fulls and daily Incrementals.  All is working fine and Accelerator is giving great results.

However, suppose we want to do an ad-hoc Accelbackup of one of the VM's in this folder.  We have to create a seperate policy targeting only this VM.  Why is it that when we run this backup (either full or incr) it tells us that "There is no complete backup image match with track journal, a regular full backup will be performed."?  As said we are already been taking regular fulls and incremenl backup of this machine so why the need to start from scratch?

Thanks,

Graham

Hi

i m using netbackup 7.6 to backup some Netapp share on a linux server.

The share are nfsv3 therefore there s no extended unix attributes.

I have some poor performance as i have a lot of small file in theses shares.

qhen i strace the netbackup client process i see a lot of

getxattr("/env/export/nfs7/agc/Data/FTP/INTERPROSCAN/116/Panther/books/PTHR20938/SF0/hmmer.hmm.gz", "system.posix_acl_default", 0x7fffde96e320, 132) = -1 EOPNOTSUPP (Operation not supported)

Indeed the getxattr call is not supported on these share.

I have put on the client the follwing parameter in bp.conf

IGNORE_XATTR = YES

but it seems not to be honoured when i launch a new backup.

Is there a way to disable the behaviour to find extended attribute files in the netbackup client.

Netbackup AIR - restricting REPLICATION jobs

Necesito una solución

I have a situuation whereby the link between two NBU sites / domains has been inactive for some time, and the link has now been upgraded and is available again.

I suspended secondary operations on the SLP's in the primary site during this period, and as a result now have a couple of thousand images awaiting replication to the secondary site.

Before I re-enable the secondary operations on the SLP's I want to ensure that I don't have hundreds of replicaton jobs starting at once, as I have seen this in the past and the system becomes unresponsive.

How can I limit the amount of replication jobs that will be submitted as I want to limit this to a manageable number (say 20 concurrent).  I know I can limit the amount of streams on the Storage Server / Disk Pool, but I am afraid that the replications will all kick in and the backups will not have any available streams to work with.

Bottom line - I want to continue to allow my backups to run but also have a limited number of replication jobs running concurrently allongside them.

Any input appreciated.

AJ

Hello There.

We have created a new Exchange 2013 farm and now we want to backup this.

The Exchange 2010 backup runs without any problems and i copied the Netbackup policy and changed the entries.

When I start the Exchange 2014 backup with the new Policy, I get this error:

NDMP Host not listed when creating a new Storage Unit

I know there has been a thread on this already but it is now closed, so need to start another. Old Thread: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/ndmp-host-not-listing-when-creating-new-storage-unit

  • Net Backup Version: 7.5
  • Media Server: Windows Server 2008
  • Current SAN: 8.1.4P1 7-Mode
  • New SAN: 8.2.3 Cluster-Mode

We have zoned in the new SAN (See above) but the NDMP Host is not showing when creating a new Storage Unit. All the current ones show fine.

If I run: nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose I get the new Host listed along with the current ones.

If I run: tpautoconf -verify <filername> It passes the login and is successfully authenticated.

If I run: tpautoconf -probe <filername> It returns no results for the new Host.

Is there anything else that could be missing for the drives to see the new Host?

Unable to set SQL Server Connection Properties for specific client

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with this issue without any solution until this moment.

I'm trying to configure a SQL client with NetBackup but the more curious thing for me is that when I start the NetBackup Database Extension, it only shows me a host name in the combo box but not the real name of the client that I am connecting to but another server in the same network which hasn't installed neither NetBackup nor SQL Server. For example it shows only server name VOLCANO01 but the local server name and the one that I need to setup is VOLCANO09.

When I try to apply settings after typing the correct name of the server and giving the credentials it shows me the common error:

"Application connection failed for VOLCANO09\. Please select a different SQL Server host and instance, or press 'cancel' to exit the NetBackup for SQL Server Graphical User Interface.".

Setting the logs in verbose this is the detail

I tried some suggestions in several posts regarding UAC, user permissions, etc., but the issue is still there.

Please advice.

Thank you.

Dear All,

Is there anyone who is willing to support creating a new NetBackup infrastrucure according to Symantec best pratices . My requirements or scnerio is as folow.

1- HQ Data

2- Regional Data (from 5 offices or sites) to bring to HQ

3- RHQ . Once All data from regional and HQ are backed up we need to send it to regional HQ or DR site.

4- I would like to have one DR site,HA or clustering or 2nd master server, whatever is best in our case  within the same HQ location.  In case something goes wrong with Master server so I can  have all the configuration and can easily restore backed up data .

NetBackup VMware Accelerator Incrementals

Hi

I found the below article which explains that a VMware incemental backup with accelerator enabled will show itself with the full backup size even though this isn't representative of the disk space used.

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO95...

All well and good.

My question is that I then want to duplicate these incrementals to tape as part of the SLP the policy it is using. I'm finding that my duplicates of these incrementals are full backup size and so taking ages to complete and also using a lot of tape space. Is the reason why I'm seeing this behaviour? or should NetBackup only be duplicating the Incremental size?

The full backups are running fine and so the Cumulative Incremental backup does have a full backup from which to reference.

I still want to use accelerator for my full backups so daon't want to turn this feature off but need to ensure that my daily incrementals that are duplicated to tape are not duplicated as full backups.

I'm using NBU 7.6.1.2 and VMware 5.5

many thanks
